Patio De Los Perfumes, Granada – A Desgn Led Perfumery With A Difference
Patio De Los Perfumes really is something special. I am by no means a ‘perfume’ kinda guy, but something drew me in one hot April afternoon in Albaicín, Granada. It could have been their perfumes and scents, maybe their store displays or quite possibly their acute attention to detail throughout their entire operation. The storefront displays their knowledge in the core ‘less is more’ ethos, pastel red brick with raw metal lettering reading PATIO, quite a nice touch if I do say so myself.
The store is housed in a former royal palace which dates from the Christian Conquests in the 15th and 16th Century, and boasts a museum, dual retail space, botanical gardens, perfume labs and its very own prayer room with 16th century frescoes and murals. And you wonder what brought me in?
Some companies pretend to be authentic, but with Patio they truly breath the word from start to finish. You see, socially responsible entrepreneurs Christian Pamies and Valérie Sabini are the Jobs and Wozniac of the perfumery world, who are working the world over with artisan factories from as far as Morocco, Palestine and Tibet in search of the rarest of ingredients to create the rarest of perfumes. This really is a passion project from the heart.
The raw ingredients that create the perfumes are present in every aspect of their operation. The packaging is what caught my eye initially, bold, yet striped back and carefully presented with a right angle every five minutes.
Patio De Los Perfumes are the masters of balance. Their perfumes hit the right note every time, each one unique and masterfully created from natures raw elements. Walking around the perfume palace you also get a sense that they understand aesthetics in its purest form. Key materials like clay, glass, steel, wood, cotton and natures own organic compounds all interplay in a mosaic of experience for visitors.
The museum is a centre of knowledge, showcasing artifacts as old as 2000 years.
Packing a Punch
You would be hard pressed to imagine that these little bottles could pack so much punch, but when you are using the finest ingredients available you soon understand. Don’t over do it on the sprays with these little guys, you will be caught out a mile away.
Bright floral graphics sit on top of matt black boxes, inside small but powerful glass bottles filled with nature’s raw energy await their time.
16th Century Frescoes
I was extra privileged to be taken upstairs to their newly renovated 1st floor. Patio have spent three years carefully renovating this 16th century palace, and included in the offering was a 16th century fresco, which is a high up dome mural that they have carefully brought back to life with renowned artists and the results speak for themselves.
Good things come in small packages.
Small bottles lined up in their onsite lab, a place where people interested in making their own perfumes can come and play the role of master perfumer. These labs are as carefully presented as their retail spaces, everything has a place and purpose, they really are living the less is more approach to life and business.
As a way to demonstrate their core belief in working with nature, Patio De Los Perfumes have their very own botanical garden in the buildings inside patio with a mixture of plants and flowers all dominating the space. This is a nice touch as it shows that ‘retail square foot’ is not a concern, but educating their customers on their beliefs are.
As you walk around the flower filled patio you can’t help but feel relaxed and content, and what I particularly liked about the way they had allowed it was the patio was in stark contrast to their carefully presented, retail side. Plants dominated and ruled here, they had a nonviolent dominating presidence, and you willfully agree to this order on the patio.
Did I mention they make their own incense with the same love and care they put into their perfumes?
Menta es Mint.
The outside patio is a nice touch which exemplifies their core belief of being plant powered. It’s hard to believe that rose petals can be tuned into fragrances and tea, but believe it you must.
As well as their wearable perfumes, Patio are also busy in the consumables department. Teas and hot beverages, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase some of this Cacao and it did indeed invigorate my body with antioxidants! They have over 30 different tea infusions to choose from, as well as other health orientated labels such as chia seeds and other seeds to their growing ranges.
Need we say more?
